The 2021 legislative session is scheduled to begin on Jan. 11. The next legislative session’s top priority is to call on the Republican majority to spend state money on a pandemic relief package.
Wahls said this is the time to use rainy day funds. He said, “it’s not just a rainy day; it’s a thunderstorm.”
Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, R-Ankeny, said he understands people are hurting and says he wants help. “We have to be smart about our funding,” Whitver said. “I look at it as a balance of trying to provide the assistance where it’s needed, with not just raiding every rainy day fund we have.”
Reynolds is also expected to propose anti-racial profiling legislation. Wahls said, “he thinks that would be a step in the right direction.”
He would also like to see lawmakers address racial disparities in the juvenile justice system.
It sounds like both parties are ready to work together. Let’s see if this holds throughout the session.
