“Mayor Pete” has earned the vote of Iowa’s LGBTQ+ communities, friends, and allies

Iowa City, IA – GoGuide Magazine, and’s editorial board has endorsed South Bend, IN Mayor Pete Buttigieg for President of the United States. GoGuide Magazine is Iowa’s only cover-to-cover LGBTQ+ publication.

This past spring and fall, GoGuide conducted an election forum interviewing several of the Democratic candidates for President and featured those interviews in the magazine and online. A complete summary of all the interviews are available in our December-January “Guide to the Iowa Caucuses” double issue, and in our expanded online “Digital Guide to the Iowa Caucuses” available at

The goal of the year-long series was to ensure the LGBTQ+ vote would not be overlooked or taken for granted by candidates; therefore, undoing the old problem of marginalizing the influence of the LGBTQ+ voter. Five candidates pledged their commitment to the magazine during the interview process to actively seek the LGBTQ+ vote in Iowa. They put it in writing. The candidates included Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Businessman Andrew Yang, Senator Cory Booker, former Congressman John Delaney, and businesswoman Marianne Williamson. Candidates like Senator Bernie Sanders’ Iowa campaign declined to participate. Despite multiple attempts to reach Senator Elizabeth Warren, Businessman Tom Steyer, and former Vice President Joe Biden all went unanswered. GoGuide made no effort to contact form New York City Mayor Michel Bloomberg due to his decision to skip the Iowa Caucuses.

After all the interviews were concluded, it was clear that two candidates rose to the top of the endorsement list. Those two candidates were Pete Buttigieg and Cory Booker. After more deliberation, Pete Buttigieg became the only choice for GoGuide Magazine to endorse. Pete Buttigieg came to Iowa and made a convincing argument for turning the page of divisiveness in Washington and shared a compelling way forward for Democrats. He has laid a plan to defeat “Trumpism” and to chart a bold new course and a program that gives Americans hope.

For the record, GoGuide concluded its endorsement review before Senator Booker officially dropped out of the race. Make no mistake; Senator Booker is a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

As an LGBTQ publication, it would be disingenuous if GoGuide didn’t endorse the first openly gay man to run for President from a major Party. Pete Buttigieg has taken his campaign to a state that in 2016 overwhelmingly went for Trump, and he has been able to share his message in deep-red counties and has been able to win over supporters. Mayor Pete has a real opportunity to win Iowa on February 3. Even if he finishes in the top four, it a testament to the “gay dude from Indiana running for President” that anyone with strong character and a strong message can have an impact in Iowa.

It is GoGuide’s conclusion Mayor Pete has the best chance of beating Donald Trump in November and turning the page to a more progressive era for our country.
